Just got back from a trip to California where I dropped off 6 hives. Made for a long trip, left Friday evening at 10:45 pm, arrived about 7:00 am. Unloaded, fed the bees, talked to the landowner for a bit, ate breakfast in Chico and headed straight back. Got home at 6:00 pm on Saturday.
My bee partner and I take our bees to CA currently to help them get a jump start on building up for the summer season. After a couple months we bring them back and split the hives into multiple hives with new queens. We are hoping for another great year down there since last year was a great success. The plan is to turn the 6 hives into at least 18 hives, possibly 24 since we added an extra brood box to give the queen more room to lay eggs in. We’ll see!!!
The hives are not in the almond orchards, they are in the foothills over looking almonds and citrus orchards. There is also plenty of manzanita blooming which the bees love. Last year they filled our feeders with comb and honey, so it will be interesting to see what we return to in April. I’ll post again with more pictures when we pick them up.
